Only a few decades ago it was widely assumed that the universe was rather stable - that it was in a "steady state". This view was held largely because there wasn't enough information to suggest otherwise. A competing view, the Big Bang, was an idea that had existed alongside steady state for decades but was not accepted until the cosmic background radiation was found that showed the universe had a beginning from a single point. This meant that the universe had been expanding from it's initial explosion.
One of the most surprising recent discoveries about the universe is not only that it is expanding, but that it is expanding at an accelerating rate
What this means is that extrapolating backwards we find the universe expanding more and more slowly. The initial state wasn't one of maximum acceleration, it was one of minimum acceleration.
So, rather than an explosion, the expansion of the universe resembles " organic growth". There is a steady increase in the momentum and energy of galaxies as time passes, which is not just a reversal of entropy, but also seems to involve the creation of energy itself.
Creation
It seem that the creation of energy and the creation of order are taking place throughout all the galaxies, and this process is the very same process that was responsible for the Big Bang - the creation of our universe ex nihilo.
Modern science has established that the creation of energy is impossible by any natural cause observable in our universe (The First Law of Thermodynamics - "Energy cannot be created or destroyed") The same applies to reversals of entropy. Modern science has established that reductions of entropy on a universe wide scale are impossible by any natural cause. (The Second Law of Thermodynamics - "Within a closed system there is always a tendency towards increase of entropy and disorder"). So it seems that the Big Bang and subsequent acceleration of the galaxies are attributable to a non-natural or super-natural cause - the ongoing creative activities of God.
